"TREMITI
ISLANDS - THE ULTIMATE PARADISE"
In the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, between a beautiful
sea and the sky, emerges the Archipelago of the Tremiti Islands,
composed by San Nicola, San Domino and Capraia. In ancient times,
the islands were known as "Insulae Diomedeae", after the
mythical Greek hero Diomede who discovered them and died there.
The Tremiti Islands perfectly combine history and mythology with
the rare beauty of nature, creating evocative images.
The Islands' fascinating setting, pleasant climate, clear waters
and uninterrupted coastlines, dotted with bays and caves, attract
a remarkable number of tourists every year. Their archipelago is
one of the most characteristic habitats of the Mediterranean Sea,
whose waters will leave you amazed at the various shades of blue
they project.
In the cliftops and peaceful bays of these islands
time moves silently, interrupted only by the song of the birds and
the call of the seagulls, in a place that isn't just picturesque,
but also very rich in history.
The island of San Nicola is the historical, administrative and religious
centre, as well as the most interesting spot with its monumental
remains.
It was on this island that the Abbey of "Santa Maria a Mare",
one of the most impressive buildings ever built on such a small
island, was founded.
Its construction began around the year 1000 A.D. by the Benedictine
Monks.
Inside it, the mosaic flooring and a crucifix are some of the most
precious remnants from the Greek/Byzantine period.
From the outside, the façade, which looks out to the sea,
offers a breathtaking view of Capraia.
Here, in a silence broken only by the cry of seagulls, you will
be overwhelmed by the charm of a glorious and heroic past.
The island of San Domino is the biggest of the archipelago. Completely
covered in green pines and surrounded by the splendor of the Mediterranean,
the island is enriched with natural arches and sea-caves, such as
the Viole caves (with their turquoise reflections) or the Blue Marino
cave.
Cars are not allowed on the island and in this calm scenery, almost
a magical one, your senses will be captured by the wonderful smells
and sounds of nature.
Consequently, in this calm scenery that seems almost magical,
the senses perceive only the smells and sounds of nature.
Here, the sea is the true protagonist of the scene, and many water
sports can be practised, such as windsurfing, sailing, scuba diving
and canoeing.
Long walks or trips on mountain bikes can be taken in the pine forest.
For those who come to the Tremiti Islands, the memory of this landscape,
perhaps the last natural archipelago, is something magical and unforgettable.
The Tremiti Islands and its inhabitants, loyal keepers of this corner
of Italian Paradise, are ready to welcome students from all over
the world. Here, watching the sun set over the sea from one of the
tiny caves of the islands, they will be able to enjoy a peaceful,
simple lifestyle, far from the chaos of today's frentic life.
