The Accademia Italiana dell'Opera "I Malatesta" opera
course is an integrated approach to Italian opera and song through a greater
understanding of text, culture, musical style and performance. The basic
course consists of classes in Italian language, singing lessons, coaching,
and Italian diction for singers. Singers can take options in stagecraft
workshops and masterclasses. Courses are from one month to a year.
Italian Language
Classes are based on continuous and direct use
of the Italian language right from beginner level, with five levels of
ability. Besides studying grammar, emphasis is placed on pronunciation
and communication. Singing in Italian is not just a question of understanding
the meaning of the text and of good pronunciation, but of overcoming the
intellectual barrier involved when singing in a foreign language. A deeper
knowledge of the Italian language gives the singer a more intimate relationship
with the text he is singing and greater ease in every day conversation
enables the singer to feel at home in the language he is singing.
Singing lessons
and Coaching sessions
Singing and coaching sessions are taught individually
and the content and direction of lessons will depend entirely on the needs
of the student.
Diction for singers
Diction differs from Italian lessons in that it
focuses entirely on accurate pronunciation. Classes will cover Italian
vowels, particularly the use of the open and closed e and o, dipthongs,
consonants, and syntactic stress. For English speakers, work will be done
on the dental consonants and for Oriental students on the labial and liquid
consonants
Seminars
Monthly seminars will be given on various subjects
of general interest to singers, such as The History of Singing, Singers
on Record, and The Art of Make-up and Costuming.
Masterclasses
The school holds masterclasses every month with
artists of international repute. These will take place in the lovely Petrella
Theatre in Longiano. All enrolled students may praticate in these classes
as listeners, while the singers will be chosen by audition.

Stagecraft
Stagecraft is essential, not just to singers wishing
to make a career in opera, but also to those wishing to concentrate on
concert performances. Stagecraft sessions will deal with stage comportment,
use and awareness of space, characterization and intepretation of a role,
use of text, and interaction with others on stage. Stagecraft workshops
can be taken as an option only by singers judged by the school to have
a suitable technique.
Concerts
Student concerts are an important part of the course giving the students
performance experience and the opportunity to put into practise the repertoire
and techniques learned during the course. Concerts take place in various
towns in the surrounding area. In late spring the school presents a concert
with orchestra and soloists chosen from singers who have participated
in the course in the year.
Rimini

The language school is situated in the historic
centre, where students can find the street market, the museum, Rimini's
Roman remains, and countless cafés where you can experience the local
culture and slow pace of living. 10 minutes away, on the sea front, it
is almost like another town. Rimini is one of the most famous seaside
resorts in Italy, and the seafront provides all the entertainments to
be expected: nightclubs and pubs, as well as sports and festivals. The
school organises trips and concerts in the many characteristic villages
surrounding Rimini, as well as to Florence, Venice, Ravenna and Siena.
Accomodation
The school is happy to organise accommodation, which is available with
host families, small hotels, or in student flats. In the host families
students have an excellent opportunity to practice their Italian and to
sample real Italian life. Breakfast is provided and on request, the use
of the kitchen for other meals. Student flats provide greater independence
and use of the kitchen facilities. A choice of hotels near the seafront
or in the city centre is available, where all rooms have private bathrooms.
Accommodation is available from the Sunday before the start of the course
until the Saturday at the end of the course. Rimini being a tourist resort,
accommodation fills quickly and we advise booking early, particularly
in the high season.
